An introduction to pond survey methods

This 3-day joint Freshwater Biological Association and Pond Conservation course will cover an introduction to identifying pond plants and macroinvertebrates, and the use of standardised methods for assessing the ecological quality of ponds.

The first day will give an overview of pond survey methods, including the National Pond Survey, followed by in-depth training in the use of PSYM.

The following two days will give an introduction to wetland plant species and invertebrate family identification with particular reference to pond communities, and will include both field and laboratory sessions. Participants will get the opportunity to apply the PSYM and National Pond Survey wetland plant and macroinvertebrate sampling methods in the field.

The tutors will be Pascale Nicolet from Pond Conservation and Terry Gledhill from the FBA. The course is run jointly by Pond Conservation at the Freshwater Biological Association and will be held in Windermere.
