Pond Conservation aims

Ponds are a unique resource for wildlife, an important part of our history and culture and provide an amenity for many communities. Ponds also play an important role in water management and carbon capture. Ponds are as important for biodiversity as rivers and lakes and have many rare species. But ponds are a threatened habitat - the number in the UK has estimated to have declined by over a third from the 1940s to the 1980s. We deliver our conservation aims through our expert staff and our conservation, community, research and policy work.

Pond Conservation's aim is to protect and increase the freshwater biodiversity of landscapes, using ponds as a major focus.

Our work

We carry out a wide range of work to create, conserve, protect and promote ponds.

We lead on and are involved in conservation work, community projects, surveys, resrearch and policy-related work.

Annual report and strategy

Download the 2007/08 Pond Conservation annual report here.

We have recently been developing the Pond Conservation 2007-2017 strategy and a summary is available here.

Pond Conservation: the Water Habitats Trust is a charity (our charity number is 1107708) and we are guided by our board of Trustees.
