Bugs, beetles, dragonflies and other invertebrates
Many of the things that live in ponds are really small and you might even need a magnifying glass to see some of them. These are invertebrates (animals without a backbone) and include beetles, dragonflies, snails and even the water scorpion. A good pond might have over 100 invertebrate species in it. Water boatmen and some beetles are very strong fliers and quickly try out new ponds. Some species, such as the broad bodied chaser dragonfly, really like new ponds with little or no plants so look out for them laying eggs in the pond. One of the most exciting things you can do in your pond is get down on your knees with a net and see what is living in it.
