Newts

There are three species of newt in Britain; Smooth or Common, Palmate and Great Crested Newt. The Great Crested Newt is a protected species.

Smooth or Common Newt

These are about 8 to 10 cm long and are generally brown. Both males and females have spots around the throat and a yellowy-orange belly which may also be spotted.

Palmate Newt

These are similar in size to the Smooth Newt but do not have spots on the throat.

Great Crested Newt

These are the biggest of our newt species and can grow up to 15 cm long. They are dark, often black and have small white spots and orange or yellow bellies with large black blotches. Its easier to find newts at night because they are more active then.
