Common Frog

Common frogs have smooth and moist skin and move by jumping.

Common toads have skin that is more bumpy and drier than a frog's skin. Toads move by walking rather than hopping and have yellow eyes (which frogs don't have).

Smooth newt

Smooth newts can be up to 11 cm long and have orange spots underneath. The males have a crest when they are breeding. Smooth newts are the most common and most likely to be found in a garden pond.

Palmate newt

Palmate newts are smaller than 9 cm and males have a long filament at the end of the tail.

Great crested newt

Great crested newts can be up to 17 cm long and the males have a crest when breeding.

Grass snake

Grass snakes are harmless and can be over one metre long. Grass snakes are widespread in England and Wales but are not found in the very north of England, Scotland or Ireland. Grass snakes like a swim in water and you are very lucky if you see one!
