Pond Creation Toolkit
Launched on Wednesday 1st June 2011, this new version of the Pond Creation Toolkit contains many additional and updated factsheets, and now 101 plant and animal species are included on the BAP Species Map.
The Pond Creation Toolkit includes a range of factsheets available to freely download. Click on bold text below to go to the right section or see an overview of the Pond Creation Toolkit here. The Pond Creation Toolkit includes:
- Core factsheets 1 to 8 with background information on the project and the best practice principles of clean water pond creation, such as location, design, project planning and implementation.
- Habitat factsheets, which present detailed information on designing ponds in different landuses, e.g. woodland, grassland etc.
- Advice factsheets, which deal with issues such as birdstrike, planning permission, and ponds in public access areas.
- Species dossiers with technical information on creating ponds specifically for over 40 pond-associated BAP species, based on their ecological requirements.
- Aggregates factsheets specifically targeted at pond creation on mineral sites.
- Case studies.
The Pond Creation toolkit also includes the BAP species map, which helps you find out which pond-associated BAP species occurs in a particular area (English BAP species only).
| Our policy as an organisation is to make all the information we produce open access, without restriction; so all parts of the Million Ponds Project Toolkit are completely free for everyone to download and use. As a charity, we rely on donations to create resources accessible to all, so please support our work by joining us - you can become a Pond Conservation supporter from as little as £2 a month. |
Training and advice
In England and Wales, Project Officers can provide advice and training for larger organisations and pond creation projects. There is currently no funding to support this work in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Training courses
We are tutoring a course run by the FSC in August 2011 that will focus on Pond Creation and Management in Preston Montford, Shropshire. This 2 day course starting on the evening of Tuesday 23rd August until Thursday 25th August is focused on evaluating the value of ponds in the UK landscape using standard protocols and using this information to plan better wetland habitats. Field visits will include ecological assessment using the PSYM method and will also explore the ideas of good practice in planning and developing pond habitats. For more information on this course and to book please see the FSC website.
One or two day training courses will be available in 2011 for project partners and pond makers.
For enquiries please contact Jo Fever on 01865 483249 or by email jofever@pondconservation.org.uk
On-site advice
On-site advice is available from Project Officers for larger pond creation schemes. Because the demand is so great and resources are limited, Project Officers can only make site visits to projects where:
1) Five or more new clean water ponds are planned, or
2) Ponds are being made for BAP species
Learn more about clean water ponds and how to make them in the Pond Creation Toolkit. For pond creation enquiries, email info@pondconservation.org.uk.
If you would like assistance on your pond creation please contact us on info@pondconservation.org.uk or 01865 483249.
