Spangled Water Beetle (Graphoderus zonatus)
‘Spare a thought for Britain’s most sparkly beetle’
This beautiful beetle, so called because it sparkles as if it has been sprayed with golden glitter, is amongst the 10 most endangered British pond creatures. These unique beetles, which are only 13-15mm long, live in just one location in the UK, in North Hampshire, where they are found in a handful of boggy pools.
The threats to this elusive beetle are: drying out of its ponds caused by low winter rainfall, pollution by run-off from neighbouring roads and farms, and changes to water levels.
Your gift of £12.00 will help us to work with local landowners to create new ponds suitable for this incredibly special, and rare, little beetle.
